  • According to the Consumer Warning Network, an individual is more likely to die from tripping and falling, accidentally being shot or suffocating in their sleep than in an airline accident. Perhaps because of the sensational treatment that airline crashes receive, people are routinely concerned with the statistical safety of planes. It is worthwhile to note, however, that U.S.-based carrier airlines rank far above their international counterparts in terms of in-air safety.

    Southwest Airlines

Southwest is the largest airline in the world when judged by the number of passengers it transports per year (as of 2007). Yet, it is also the safest airline in the U.S., with zero recorded fatalities in its history.

    Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines is the second-safest carrier in the U.S. and the only carrier, as of 2009, to service every continent with the exception of Antarctica. It ranks as the second-safest with a percentage of .17 fatal events per million miles traveled.

    Northwest Airlines

Though Northwest has now officially merged with Delta Airlines, its previous carrier record is still available for perusal. In terms of carrier safety, it ranks third, with an average of 0.21 fatal events per million miles traveled.

    Continental Airlines

Continental Airlines is the the fourth-largest airline in the U.S. based on revenue passenger miles and ranks fourth in terms of in-air safety. The carrier has an average of 0.24 fatal events per million miles traveled.

    U.S. Air

U.S. Airways is the fifth-largest airline in the U.S. The carrier has an average of 0.28 fatal events per million miles traveled.
