In 1971, Carolyn Davidson, a graphics-design student at Portland State University, submitted a symbol she designed to Nike. The symbol eventually became known as the Swoosh. She was paid $35 for her work. Davidson in 1983 received Nike stock and a Swoosh-shaped ring as a "bonus" for her contribution.
