  • Gastric bypass surgery results in a reduced stomach size. Following surgery, patients are unable to eat a normal diet for some months, as they adjust to their altered stomachs and digestion. Their recovery diets begin with liquids and progress in stages until they are eating regular foods again.

    Liquids

For a day or two following gastric bypass surgery, patients can drink clear liquids, beginning with small amounts of water, then sugarless juice, diet flat soda, gelatin, and clear broth.

    Low-Fat, High-Protein Liquids

If all goes well with clear fluids, patients progress to a low-fat, high-protein liquid diet for one to two weeks, and start taking a chewable vitamin and mineral supplement.

    Soft Diet

A diet of pureed foods is the next stage. A patient starts this when the doctor gives the go-ahead. The diet includes low-fat, high-protein foods that are soft and smooth, such as cottage cheese, pureed lean meats and poultry, scrambled eggs, and strained baby food.

    Regular Foods

A patient may be ready to start eating regular small meals in eight or more weeks. The diet should contain all food groups. It should begin with low-fat, high-protein foods at every meal and liquids between meals.

    Other Considerations

A smaller stomach holds less food, so patients should be careful to eat less, chew thoroughly, and eat more slowly.
