The food stamp program is now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It is a program that provides low-income households with the means to purchase food at grocery stores.
History
SNAP has its earliest origins in 1939 to help families in the Depression Era.
What's Covered
Food stamps can be used to buy foods for the household to eat, such as breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, fish, dairy products, and seeds and plants that can produce food.
Not Covered
There are certain items that cannot be bought with food stamps even though they can be purchased at grocery stores. Some of these items are alcohol, cigarettes, pet food, cleaning and household supplies, vitamins and medicines, and hot foods.
How to Use Food Stamps
When you are approved for food stamps you will receive an EBT card that can be used in the store. If you have paper food stamp coupons, you will not be able to use them.
Considerations
If you do not use up all of your monthly benefits in one month, they will carry over to the next month. However, if you have not used your benefits in one year, you will no longer have access to the food stamp benefits.
