Laptop computers can go with you anywhere, but getting them hooked up to the Internet is slightly harder. It requires a communication device, Internet service and a knowledge of how to use both.
Types
Accessing the Internet on a laptop requires some type of Internet connection. There are two basic types, those that use cables and those that are wireless.
Considerations
Though it is possible to connect a laptop to the Internet using cables, many laptop users prefer wireless connections. This makes it easier to use the Internet throughout the house and in public.
Components
Every Internet connection requires a few basic components. These include a means of communication, such as a modem, wireless router or network interface card, and Internet service, such as a subscription or a wireless Internet network "hot spot."
Other Requirements
Older laptops may require a cable connection or a network interface card. Newer laptops usually come equipped with built-in antennas to detect and use wireless Internet networks.
Security
When using wireless Internet, connect only to networks you recognize and trust. Using an unfamiliar and unsecured network may compromise your computer's security.
