Veterinarian assistants use various skills to work with veterinarians and veterinarian technicians to provide medical care and support to animals. Depending on the practice or work location, certain experience and education may be required to work as a veterinarian assistant.

Role

Vet assistants play a major role in animal hospitals and veterinarian clinics. They must have a love for animals and be willing and comfortable with preforming various tasks like grooming, sterilizing and cleaning dirty kennels. They also care for an array of other animal needs.

Time Frame

Usually, veterinarian assistants need a high school diploma and some work experience with animals, whether it be paid or volunteer work. Job requirements vary, and some workplaces may require associate degrees or special certifications. In other cases, job training is provided.

Considerations

Depending on where you plan to work as a veterinarian assistant--like at a zoo, aquarium, horse stables, animal hospital or vet clinic--you may be required to learn certain medical procedures such as drawing blood, injecting medicine and taking X-rays. Some workplaces have vet assistants assist in surgery.

Benefits

Working with animals is very rewarding, as you can save animals' lives and help them recover from injury and illness, but it is often physically and emotionally demanding.
