Every country has a flag to represent it. Each country's flag has a special appearance that distinguishes it from all other flags. The flag of Honduras has displayed its unique arrangement of blue and white since it was adopted in 1866.
Blue Stripes
The flag has two blue horizontal stripes, one across top of the flag and one across the bottom. The light blue color represents the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. These stripes sandwich the middle white stripe because the Pacific Ocean is on the west side of the country and the Caribbean Sea is on the east.
Other Meanings for the Blue
The blue stripes also stand for vigilance, truth and loyalty, perseverance and justice, which are values that Honduras holds as a country.
White Stripe
The horizontal white stripe in the center stands for peace and honesty. These two traits rank high in importance to the nation of Honduras.
Blue Stars
In the middle of the white stripe are five blue stars. The stars represent the five countries of Central America: Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica. The stars stand together in the hope that someday the five countries will reunite.
History
The colors white and blue also honor the former unity of the Central American countries when they were the Federal Republic of Central America. Blue and white were the colors of the short-lived republic.
