  • New parents quickly discover that their baby's sleep patterns are very different from those of adults. Every baby has slightly different sleeping habits, from the infant who sleeps all the time--even while nursing--to the "party" baby, up all night.

    The First Week

Most neonates, or first-week newborns, sleep up to 18 hours a day or more. Don't expect uninterrupted sleep, though; neonates have to nurse frequently, with bottle-fed babies nursing every four hours and breast-fed babies nursing every two to three hours.

    Newborns

After the first week, newborns will sleep as much as 16 hours daily, interrupted frequently for feeding. A few lucky parents will have newborns sleeping through the night by the end of the first month.

    Infants

Between three and six months of age, a baby will sleep five to six hours at night, but will still need as much as 16 hours of sleep daily.

    Older Babies

Babies between six and 12 months of age need 12 to 14 hours of sleep daily, but should sleep a good solid block of this at night. At this point, many babies who wake at night can be soothed back to sleep without feeding them.

    Toddlers

Toddlers aged 12 to 24 months still need 12 to 14 hours of sleep. However, instead of taking several naps, they will sleep eight to 10 hours at night, with one or two good naps during the day.
