Psoriasis can be triggered by many factors, according to Herbcompanion.com. It is important to treat this skin condition internally, as well as topically.
Cause
Psoriasis can be caused by trauma, emotional stress, a bacterial infection and dry skin.
Another Factor
An abnormal immune system also plays a role in the development of psoriasis, which is an inflammatory skin disease that tends to run in families.
Sarsaparilla
Herbs that are effective in treating psoriasis include herb sarsaparilla, which has long been considered a blood purifier, according to Mothernature.com.
Immune System and Liver
Psoriasis seems to respond to herbal treatment. The herbs enhance the function of the immune system and aid the liver so that it can do what it's supposed to do.
Other Options
Another herb that you should consider is gotu kola, which is an Indian plant and has long been used to treat leprosy. It can be applied as a salve or given via an injection. Licorice root improves liver function and battles various type of skin dermatitis, including psoriasis. Pau d'arco, which is the bark of a South American tree, is also good for treating psoriasis. Mothernature.com reports that gamma linoleic acid, which is found in chamomile, licorice and evening primrose oil, helps reduce skin inflammation.
De-Stress
If you think that your psoriasis is caused by stress, try to decompress by drinking dermatitis tea. Simmer ½ tsp. each of licorice root, burdock root, pau d'arco bark, sarsaparilla root and bupleurum root for 10 minutes in water. Let this steep for another 10 minutes before straining.
