  • You must check your age, filing status and income to determine whether you have to file a federal tax return. The first thing is to decide your filing status and then check on whether you have met the income level for that status depending on your age. However, in some cases, even if it isn't required to file a tax return, you may want to file one, because you may be entitled to a refund.

    Single

If you are single or filing single for tax purposes, you must file federal taxes if you have earned omore than $9,350 and are younger than 65. If you are 65 or over, you have to file if you have earned $10,750 or more.

    Married Filing Jointly

One of the best statuses to have is married filing jointly. If you qualify for this status and both parties are under 65 and have earned at least $18,700, you must file a return. If at least one of the parties is 65 or over then the amount is $19,800 and if both are at least 65, then the amount is $20,900.

    Married Filing Separately

If you are married and have to file separately, your age isn't a consideration. If your gross income is $3,650 or higher, you need to file a return.

    Head of Household

Qualifying for head of household gives you more benefits than a single taxpayer or one who is married filing separately. If this is your status and you are under 65, you must file a return if you have earned at least $12,000. If you are 65 or older, then filing is required if your income is at least $13,400.

    Qualifying Widow or Widower

The last status for filing a federal return is a qualifying widow or widower. For this status, you must have a dependent child and your gross income must be at least $15,050 if you are under 65 and $16,150 if you are 65 or older.

    Other Circumstances

Sometimes even if you don't qualify to file a return in any of the above categories, you may still need to file. A couple of these are if you are a dependent on someone else's return and have earned $950 in unearned income or if you have to pay payroll taxes such as Medicare or Social Security.
