SR22 is the name of a form provided to the Georgia Department of Driver Services by the driver's insurance company. The form serves as proof of future insurance for a driver whose license has been suspended due to a violation and who would like their license reinstated.
Considerations
The Georgia Department of Driver Services will inform specific drivers if they are required to carry SR22 insurance. Typically, SR22 forms are required after a court order stemming from a conviction involving driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Function
While Georgia requires every driver to carry insurance, some drivers present additional risks and Georgia requires additional proof that these high-risk drivers are insured so they can meet their financial responsibility in the event of an accident.
Time Frame
Georgia law typically requires drivers to maintain SR22 insurance for three years.
Purpose
The form is provided by the insurance company. SR22 forms are evidence of the agreement between the insurance company and the insured that the insured person has paid or will pay for coverage and the insurance company is providing and will provide coverage in the future.
Cost
SR22 insurance is more expensive than standard coverage. Many large companies do not provide it. Drivers should shop around for the most favorable policy.
