Daytime Graduations

A graduation or commencement event held in the morning or afternoon is generally considered to be informal, especially if held outdoors. It is appropriate for men to wear sportswear appropriate to the climate. In tropical locations, even shorts may be acceptable if very presentable. Women may be guided by what they would wear in the daytime to a restaurant or church or office; a dress, skirt, or trouser outfit are suitable.

Evening Events and Receptions

If an evening graduation is to be held in a church, school auditorium, or theater, most guests wear the kind of clothing they think is appropriate for an evening gathering. Men may wear suits or jackets and ties; women may wear their "Sunday" clothes, pants or dresses. This is especially true if the event is to be followed by another celebration like a reception or dinner.

The Guest's Place

Because a graduation is intended to focus attention on the accomplishments of a student, the guests should dress modestly and in good taste. Noisy jewelry or sparkling denim are best saved for other occasions.

Business Attire.

. Business places still offer some guidance about what to wear on occasions when one has little or no experience in selecting a wardrobe. An employee in a fine store is always neatly groomed with most of the body concealed beneath clothing. A deeply plunging neckline or a short, short skirt are not suitable.

The high school graduate may have some definite ideas about what his guests should wear. The graduate's parents might also be consulted about the formality of the event.
