The field of radiologic technology is predicted to grow by 15 percent through 2016 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, resulting in the creation of many jobs for individuals with the right training.

Types of Education

The most common education for a MRI technologist is an associate's degree, reports the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some technologists hold diplomas from radiologic technology training programs, while others hold bachelor's degrees in the field.

Time Frame

Diploma programs typically require only one year of post-secondary study. Associates and bachelors degree take two and four years of schooling to complete, respectively.

Locations

Diploma programs in MRI technology are available at medical training or trade schools, while associates are usually granted by junior or community colleges. Bachelor's degree programs are most common at traditional colleges and universities.

Licensure

Most states require MRI technologists to receive a state-issued license before treating patients independently. Typically, this is done through the successful completion of a written examination.

Certification

Although not mandatory, many employers prefer to hire MRI technologists who have certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The AART grants certified MRI technologist status to individuals who pass an exam.
