  • The first step in your U.S. Navy career is to pass through the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), from which you will move on to boot camp. The Navy's website gives a complete list of items to bring to MEPS, to help you get through the first few days.

    Clothing

You will need a few clothing items for the first day or two. Wear a pair of comfortable shoes and pack belongings in a small suitcase or gym bag. The contents should include three pairs of underwear, a one-day supply of casual clothing, one pair of calf-length white socks and, if needed, a pair of standard eyeglasses. Women may also bring bras and, if desired, a slip and pantyhose. Clothes should not be ragged or have holes, and no halter tops are allowed.

    Personal Grooming

Keeping a sharp appearance is a must in the military, and you will require several personal items in this regard. These items include shower shoes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap in a case, hairbrush/comb, toothbrush in a case, shaving cream, dental floss and a razor.

    Paperwork

Certain documents are required to complete your processing, including your birth certificate, Social Security card and driver's license. Bring a bank deposit slip and any paperwork pertaining to marriage or divorce. Other paperwork may include orders from your recruiter, ROTC documentation, college transcripts and information on dependent family members.

    Miscellaneous Items

Bring a padlock and at least $10 but no more than $50 cash. The Navy recommends packing something to read during downtime. Anything else that you might require can be purchased at the base exchange.

    What Not to Bring

The Navy advises that you may not bring certain items, such as nonprescription medication, playing cards, tobacco items, razor blades, batteries and valuable personal items.
