  • A bone density test is also called a DEXA scan. It uses x-rays to check your bones for calcium and other minerals to determine your risk of osteoporosis and fracture.

    DEXA

Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the most common method of measuring bone mineral density. It's easy to perform and does not use much radiation.

    Areas Measured

A DEXA scan is typically done on the hip and spine. Measuring bone density at these sites can predict the risk of fracture in other areas.

    During the Scan

You lie on a padded table for about 10 minutes while an imager passes over your body. The scanner produces two x-ray beams of different energy levels that measure the target sites.

    Bone Density Calculation

The thickness of the bone determines the amount of the x-rays that pass through for each type of beam. The difference between the two types of beams is used to calculate your bone density.

    False Elevations of Bone Density

A curvature of the spine called scoliosis, multiple fractures and atherosclerosis can artificially elevate a DEXA scan measurement.
