  • Race car driving tracks are found all over the world and across the U.S. in every state. Most large metropolitan areas have at least one or more racetracks, though tracks are usually located on the outskirts of cities and towns.

    Race Track

A race track is anywhere that auto racing is held on a competitive level. This kind of a track is not open to the general public for driving, but fans watch the races from the sidelines and from bleachers. Drivers and teams must register before they can use a track. There are usually waivers involved because of how dangerous the high speeds can be.

    Road Course

A paved road course is where road racing is held. As opposed to an oval, a road course has multiple corners that turn in both directions. Some road courses are Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA, and Thunderbird Raceway in Phoenix, AZ. There is a heavy emphasis on handling and braking at this type of track.

    Oval Track

A paved oval track is another type of track that is generally used for Nascar and Sprint car racing. The cars travel in a circle and the tracks generally have high banking to allow higher speeds.

    Dirt Track

A dirt track can be similar to a road course and an oval, but it is made of dirt, not paved. The vehicles that race on this type of course are off-road vehicles designed to be driven on dirt.

    Drag Strip

A drag strip is a straight section of paved road that is used for drag racing. Competing vehicles race in a straight line. The fastest car in a straight line wins.
