Every country has a flag to represent it. Each flag has a special appearance that distinguishes it from the other flags. Behind every flag's colors, there is a meaning significant and unique to that country.
Black
Black is the color at the top of the flag. It stands for determination. Black was the color of soldiers' jackets during the Napoleonic wars.
Yellow
Yellow is the color of the bottom horizontal band on the German flag. The yellow represents generosity. The yellow may have originated from the gold buttons worn on the jackets of soldiers.
Red
Red is the middle band. It stands for hardiness, strength, bravery and valor. The origin of red may be from the red braids worn on soldiers' uniforms.
Origin
The colors of the German flag are based on the colors of the Imperial coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. These colors have been associated with Germany since medieval times.
Facts
The three colors now represent the unity of Germany after the fall of the Berlin wall. This flag was chosen to show that Germany was finally united. During Hitler's reign (1935-1945), the flag was red with a black swastika. East Germany (1959-1989) had a different flag with communist symbols on it.
