An employee feedback session might backfire for a variety of reasons, including negative comments or a poor rating system. But in many cases it is because the employee feels that he is being treated unfairly by the manager. A 360 degree feedback system might help solve this problem.
Identification
360 degree feedback includes comments, evaluations, and suggestions from non-managers in addition to the manager. This includes co-workers, customers, and suppliers.
Considerations
The feedback session will take into account the employee's behaviors, strengths, weaknesses, listening skills, teamwork, ethics, and motivation to grow.
Benefits
Since the employee has comprehensive feedback from all of the people around him he is more likely to feel that the review is valuable and fair.
Anonymity
The feedback from co-workers, customers and suppliers can be anonymous so that all parties will be completely honest when giving opinions.
Effectiveness
According to a research article published in the Journal of Management Development, this type of feedback works differently at certain types of companies. For instance, it may work better in education and manufacturing companies as compared to government agencies.
