  • Candida is a type of yeast that naturally occurs in the body's intestine and aids in digestion. In some patient's with weak immune systems this otherwise useful bacteria can cause infections. According to Marcelle Pick, an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner and founder of the Women to Women natural health practice, candida "most commonly appears as a vaginal yeast infection or as oral thrush. But Candida albicans can also spread inside the body and become a systemic problem."

    Systemic Yeast

Systemic yeast is an invasive form of yeast created when individual cells combine and form chains with long root-like structures that are capable of penetrating the intestinal lining and entering the bloodstream.

    Symptoms

Common symptoms can include vaginal yeast infections, thrush, cystitis, eczema, acne, and flatulence.

    Diet

The first step in the cleanse is a diet that rids the body of the yeast's food supply. Typical eliminated foods include sugar, alcohol, breads, peanuts and all commercially prepared foods.

    Supplements

In addition acidophiles, vitamin C, garlic, and vitamin E are recommended to boost the body's immune system and the natural bacteria that typically keep Candida in balance.

    Die Off

In cases where Candida has been present for extended periods patients can experience die off where the toxicity of large amounts of the bacteria dying at once causes the patient to temporarily feel ill.
