  • Homeschooling is an alternative type of education where parents teach their children at home rather than allow them to attend regular schools. Some parents educate their children at home because of religious reasons while other parents are not satisfied with the education their children receive in the school system.

    History

In the Colonial era, there were parents who chose not to send their children to school and taught them at home. Much of the homeschooling had the basics such as grammar and mathematics but religious instruction was also included. By the 1800s, there was an increase in public schools but homeschooling remained a viable choice.

    Benefits

A benefit of homeschooling is that you're able to incorporate lessons that you feel schools aren't covering accurately. For example, a parent who is concerned about his child's understanding of American history may teach him the Constitution and different political movements throughout American history.

    Disadvantages

The disadvantages of homeschooling are that children may not be exposed to social settings that allow them to interact with other children on a daily basis. It can also hinder them academically because, with some subjects, the teachers will be in a better position to teach the children than a parent.

    Homeschooling Resources

Parents who plan to homeschool their children have many websites, magazines and books that will help them in this process. The American Homeschooling Association's website has resources parents can use. Since there is no standard homeschool curriculum, you can visit your public library or homeschooling support group to get teaching materials.

    Legal Issues

Homeschooling is legal in all states but each school district may have other guidelines, so be sure to check with your local school board or state board of education.
