Construction began on the Hoover Dam in June, 1933. The dam's 17 hydroelectric generators started operating in 1935, two years ahead of schedule. The cost to build the dam was around $50 million in 1935. Adjusted for inflation, that amount would have equaled $690 million in 2008.
