Birth control is any procedure that prevents pregnancy. The birth control groups are barrier, hormonal, withdrawal, sterilization, natural family planning, and abstinence.
Natural Forms of Contraception
The natural forms of contraception are abstinence and natural family planning. Abstinence is the refraining from sexual intercourse. Natural family planning is the planning of sexual activity around the period of ovulation.
Barrier Forms of Contraception
Male condoms, female condoms, diaphragms, spermicides, the cervical cap, and the contraceptive sponge are the barrier types of contraception. They block sperm from going into a woman's uterus.
Hormonal Forms of Contraception
Birth control pills, injections, the intrauterine device, birth control patches, and vaginal rings are the hormonal types of contraception. They prevent ovulation, harden cervical mucus, or thin the lining of the uterus.
Sterilization Forms of Contraception
Women undergo tubal ligation to achieve sterilization. Men undergo vasectomies to achieve sterilization. These procedures are surgical.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal involves the man removing his penis from the vagina before ejaculation occurs.
