The national flag of Costa Rica contains five stripes, with the central red stripe composing 2/6 of the flag. The other stripes are 1/6 the size of the flag. The center stripe is surrounded by two white stripes, which in turn are surrounded by blue stripes at the top and bottom of the flag.

    Designer

The Costa Rican flag was designed in 1848 by the first lady of Costa Rica, Patricia Oreamuno. It was based on the French flag. The 1789 French Revolution promoted the ideas of freedom, equality and brotherhood, which inspired Oreamuno.

    Red

The large central strip of the Costa Rican flag is said to represent both the blood shed by the Costa Rican people in their battle for freedom from Spanish control, and the warmth of the people of Costa Rica.

The two white stripes of the flag are representative of the clear thinking and wisdom of the Costa Rican people. White also stands for the peaceful nature of the Costa Rican nation.
