  • The Chinese government has specific requirements regarding the entry of U.S. citizens into its nation. These requirements vary according to purpose of stay and destination and in nearly all instances a visa is required.

    Regulations

The Chinese government requires a valid passport and visa for U.S. citizens wishing to enter the country. A visa must be obtained through local Chinese embassies or consulates; they cannot be acquired upon arrival.

    Exceptions

Individuals traveling through China with an expectation of remaining there less than 24 hours are exempt from requiring a passport provided they do not leave the airport. Also, U.S. citizens are exempt from the visa requirement when traveling to Hong Kong and staying for fewer than 90 days.

    Types

The Chinese government issues eight types of visas, including tourist, business and student visas. The tourist visa is usually valid for 90 days.

    Application Materials

The Chinese government requires that all applicants have six months of validity remaining on their passport and at least one blank page. The visa application, a recent 2-by-2-inch photo and all applicable fees must be submitted as well.

    Submitting the Application

All visa applications must be made in person at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate. A friend, relative or travel/visa agent can also be utilized if you are unable to apply in person.
