While high-definition televisions (HDTVs) have much more advanced technology than a standard TV, they are also not cheap. You may wonder why you would want to purchase one.
Movies
If you have a DVD player capable of "upscaling," you can watch your DVDs on an HDTV with a much sharper, larger image than a standard TV.
Broadcasts
With a digital tuner, you can watch HD content for free on an HD television. Prime-time network television is typically broadcast in HD, and PBS has several channels that transmit in HD throughout the day.
Feild of View
Particularly with sports, HD literally allows you to see more of the action. The camera has a wider angle on the playing field or arena that you would not see on a standard TV.
HD Cable or Satellite
Your local cable or satellite operators also offer HD versions of many channels, like the Discovery Channel and the Food Network. An HDTV allows you to watch those channels in an ideal presentation.
Immersion
HDTVs, with their higher-quality image and tendency toward larger screens than standard TVs, can make it easier to become absorbed in the programming, particularly with the right lighting and audio setups.
