  • The inside of your computer contains a variety of individual components that process instruction, store data and display information. A hard drive is one such component.

    Hard Drive Basics

A hard drive is a storage device. Your documents, spreadsheets, photos and operating system, such as Windows, are stored on your hard drive. The hard drive has a power cable and a data cable to move information around.

    Hard Drive Operation

When you start your computer, it "boots" your hard drive. This turns it on and causes the platters inside it to start spinning. Information is sent from the motherboard to the hard drive to instruct the drive to start your operating system.

    Laptop Hard Drives

Laptops use smaller drives than desktop computers. This is to conserve space. Laptop drives also usually spin slower to save on battery power, and they usually have less storage space because they are smaller.

    Solid State Drives

A solid state drive does not have any moving parts and thus operates silently. It is much faster than a standard "mechanical" drive. However, it is more expensive in terms of dollars per megabyte of space.

    Physical Arrangements

A desktop computer can contain multiple hard drives to be used for additional storage space or as emergency backups in case of data loss or mechanical failure.
