  • Contrary to popular belief, the colors of the America flag were not associated with any symbolism when the flag was first created. Symbols were attributed to the colors by secretary of the Continental Congress Clarence Thompson five years after the flag was originally designed.

    Red

    Red denotes valor and hardiness.

    White

The color white is said to symbolize innocence and purity.

    Blue

Thompson declared blue, the color of the Chief, to stand for vigilance, perseverance and justice.

    Stars

The stars are present to remind man of his continuous striving for the heavens. There are 50 stars, one for each state.

    Stripes

The rays of the sun are represented by the stripes of the American flag.

    Fringe

The gold fringe sometimes attached to the flag is purely decorative. There is no law forbidding or supporting this practice, and it is only used on indoor flags.
