The colors red, yellow, black and green are used often in Rastafarian, or rasta, religion. The colors were taken from the Marcus Garvey movement, which promoted the idea of African-Americans returning to Africa.
Overall
In general, the Rastafarian colors are tied in some way to Africa--particularly Ethiopia--and slavery. Ethiopia is thought of as the promised land in the Rastafarian religion.
Red
The color red is said to stand for the blood of the martyrs, the slaves and exploited people of Africa. It can also stand for the triumph of the Rastafarian religion.
Yellow/Gold
Yellow stands for the gold and the resources taken from Africa.
Black
Black is meant as a symbol for black people.
Green
Green is meant to stand for the beauty and the rich earth of Africa.
