  • Elderly abuse usually takes place by someone taking care of an elderly person. It could be the older person's child or spouse, a nurse or nurse's aide in a nursing home or a caregiver hired to take care of him.

    At-Risk Population

The elderly are an at-risk population for abuse, because they're usually physically weaker than their caregivers, may have hearing and seeing problems, and may have memory problems.

    Location

Most of the time abuse takes place where the elderly person lives.

    Physical Abuse

If someone hurts an elderly person on purpose and it results in pain or injury, it's considered physical abuse.

    Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse occurs when someone has sexual contact with an elderly person without or against her consent.

    Mental Abuse and Neglect

The elderly are abused mentally by someone who screams at them, threatens them and humiliates them. Neglect occurs when a person does not fulfill caregiving responsibilities.

    Financial Abuse

This occurs when someone exploits an elderly person for money. A caregiver could steal money, forge the person's signature on a check or misuse the person's credit card.
