The hazard lights of a standard commercial vehicle engage all four turning signals, blinking them simultaneously in the front and rear of the car. An eye-catching universal signal of distress, this effect is intended only for emergency situations.
Roadside Assistance
If you have pulled off the road due to mechanical difficulty, your hazard lights alert passing drivers to your situation, letting them know you are in need of assistance.
Safety
While pulled over because of mechanical issues, or to assist a fellow driver, your blinking hazard lights increase your visibility to passing cars, decreasing your chances of getting struck.
Breakdown
In some circumstances, your vehicle may break down in the middle of the road, forcing you to slow down and stop. Hazard lights let drivers behind you know something is wrong so they will not be caught off-guard by your sudden change in speed and/or stoppage.
Warning
Your hazard lights are an excellent warning device and should be used to alert other drivers when you observe an accident ahead.
When Not to Warn
Your hazards should not be used to warn about weather concerns and other hazardous road conditions, as the flashing lights can decrease visibility or add further distraction to an already dangerous situation.
Emergency
If you are an involved in an emergency vehicular situation, such as taking someone to the hospital, your hazard lights will draw attention to and help explain your erratic driving maneuvers.
