Filing taxes in Hawaii is confusing without the proper information, which isn't unusual anywhere in the United States. Not only do residents need to file Hawaii tax forms, but those who come to work in Hawaii but do not reside in the state are expected to file tax forms as well. You need to know about a couple of forms, and the rest is doing the legwork of actually filling out the paperwork.
Form N-11
The Form N-11 is for full-time residents of Hawaii. It's to be filed by anyone working, living and going to school on any island in the state. Gather all your income information for the year you're filing, along with any significant purchases you might need to claim, such as a car. Have a list of the deductions you can claim for the year.
Form N-15
The construction and entertainment trades offer employment to non-residents. Many people work in Hawaii for months at a time without being considered a resident. If you reside only part time or work in Hawaii for only part of year, the Form N-15 applies to you. As a resident would, you'll need to make sure you have all income records from your time spent in Hawaii. Although you might find a few appropriate deductions, you might not find many deduction incentives available due to living outside the state.
Consider Help
If you're not confident in preparing your own tax forms, you can easily attend the year-end workshops offered on all islands in Hawaii. These workshops are designed to help you properly file your tax forms in person or online. If you don't live in Hawaii but need to file tax forms, you can usually find a service in your area that's qualified to file out-of-state forms. Otherwise, you can find help at Hawaii's tax website.
