Pruning trees properly produces stronger, healthier, and more attractive trees. Knowing when to prune will protect the plant from damage and promote these positive qualities, while pruning improperly will harm or even kill the tree.
Conifers
Prune conifers, trees with cones, any time of year. Pruning during the dormant season is best, minimizing sap and resin flow from cut branches.
Hardwood Trees without Flowers
Prune hardwood trees in their dormant period mid-winter if they do not produce showy flowers. Healing is promoted as the wound will be grown over in the spring. Disease is prevented as well as there is no sap or resin to attract bugs.
Flowering Hardwoods
Prune flowering hardwoods in the dormant season for the reasons listed above with the following exception: trees that bloom in early spring should be pruned after flowering. Pruning late in the dormant season will remove buds that have not broken through the bark.
Pruning for Health
Remove diseased or infested limbs as soon as possible to prevent the spread of these conditions.
Pruning for Safety
Remove limbs immediately that are damaged, broken, or pose a threat by falling.
Electrical Lines
Call the electric company, city utility service, or a professional tree trimmer if a tree has grown into electrical lines since a tree can conduct electricity and cause shock or fire.
