Adults should lower their calorie intake by 500 to 1,000 calories per day (or burn some of those extra calories off with exercise) to lose one pound per week.
Number of Meals
It is recommended that you eat three meals a day with one snack or five to six smaller meals throughout the day, according to The American Academy of Family Physicians.
Exercise
It is recommended that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise (or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise) every week, with strength exercises that use all major muscle groups twice a week, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
