  • Both carbureted and fuel-injected engines rely on fuel pressure to feed the engine. The ability to monitor the amount of line pressure in your fuel system can prove critical to efficient tuning and attaining the proper air/fuel ratio.

    Importance

If your fuel system has too little pressure, the engine will lean out and refuse to run. Too much can cause system damage, inconsistent A/F ratio and poor fuel mileage.

    Location

Many fuel-pressure gauges are mounted inside the engine compartment, attached to either the fuel-injector rail or feed line.

    Liquid-filled Type

This is the most commonly used pressure gauge and uses pressure differential to move a needle on the gauge face. These are also known as "mechanical" gauges.

    Electrical

Electrical gauges use a piezoelectric (static) sensor on the engine to control a servo inside the gauge. This type is preferred for those who wish to mount the gauge inside the passenger compartment because it does not contain pressurized fuel.

    Manufacturers

Some of the more popular gauge manufacturers are Mr. Gasket, Auto Meter, Hypertech and Star Products.
