<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Consider the Occasion
In most cases, indulging in alcohol is alright as long as it's not done on a regular basis. Being conscious of exactly what you're consuming is one of the easiest and best ways to stay in control of your health. In fact, having a drink on a special occasion, such as New Year's Eve or a birthday party, should pose no additional risk to your health.
On the Other: Consider the Risks
Consuming alcohol on a regular basis can put your health at risk. Alcohol interferes with the absorption of some nutrients your body needs, such as vitamin D and especially calcium, both of which are important to keep osteoporosis in check.
Bottom Line
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism finds that long-term and consistent use of alcohol is dangerous; however, if you limit alcohol intake to a couple times a year and remain moderate when you do indulge, you won't be putting yourself at risk.
