Antique plates made from silver, bronze, glass, pottery and porcelain vary widely in price. Most antique plate collectors collect plates made of pottery and porcelain. The value of these plates varies according to time period, country of origin, decoration, maker, condition and rarity.
Value
Antique plates range in price from $2 to more than $2,000 each. Most are worth from $15 to $50.
Time Period
Generally, the older the plate, the higher the value. However, a plate from a design era that was very short, such as Art Nouveau or the Aesthetic Movement, are of extra value because so few plates were made in that style.
Country of Origin
Plates from Europe are typically worth more than American antique plates.
Decoration
Antique plates with hand-painted decoration are more valuable than plates with machine-applied decoration. In addition, value increases for plates with gilded (real gold adhered with a special glue) surfaces or edges.
Maker
Plates made by a historic high-quality factory such as R.S. Prussia are typically worth more than plates produced at an unknown factory.
Condition
Cracks, worn spots and chips reduce the value of plates. Pristine, like-new plates are more valuable.
