  • Not only can a dim or failing tail light be frustrating, it can be dangerous. Police officers may also pull you over and possibly give you a ticket for the light. There are a couple reasons a tail light may not work, especially if it is working on one side but not the other. The cost of fixing a broken tail light can range from virtually nothing to extremely expensive, but fixing the light as soon as possible is necessary for safe and ticket-free driving.

    The bulb

If a tail light is out, most often, unless it is a connection problem, the bulb is out. With connection problems or blown tail light fuses, usually both tail lights will be out, which is how you can diagnose this problem versus a burnt out light bulb. The bulb is below the plastic cover over the tail light area. You need to determine how it is removed before attempting to remove it. If you do not do this, you may accidentally brake the plastic cover. Some plastic covers are attached with screws. Others simply pop on and off. To just pop the cover off, use a screw driver to get under the plastic, carefully lift, and the plastic cover will pop off. If it is screwed on, use the proper screwdriver to unscrew the cover and remove the cover. The bulb will be blackened toward the base, or the fuse in the middle of the light bulb will be separated (blown). Unscrew the bulb and replace it with a new bulb. Before driving, make sure to have someone check the light for you as you turn the lights on and also press the brakes. If this does not solve the problem, an automobile mechanic should be consulted, as it may be an electrical problem that should be left to a professional.
