When you are connecting multiple computers in a business or home environment, you will come across software that helps you with the network you have created. This software can perform multiple functions.
Network Software Basics
Most of this type of software is now built into your operating system. When you attempt to connect a computer to the Internet, Windows will use its own helper applications (often called "wizards") to establish the connection, diagnose some issues and save its settings for future use.
Other Built-In Software
When you connect a printer or scanner to a network hub or router, the printer will use provided software to establish a connection over the network and manage printing or scanning jobs, usually on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Network Management Applications
An administrator can also use software to make sure only authorized people have access to the network. This software keeps logs of connection activity, providing information such as bandwidth usage and time of access.
Networking Access Software
You can also use networking software to search for available networks. This is particularly popular with Wi-Fi, which uses wireless technology. With this software, you can "see" multiple wireless networks when their signals are sufficiently strong.
Informal Uses
"Networking" can also refer to instant messaging software or other programs for direct communication, such as IRC (Internet Relay Chat), that allow you to "network" with other people for things like job opportunities.
