    Home air conditioning units come in different sizes depending on the size of the house. An average scale for freon is around 2 pounds of freon per ton of the unit.

    Again with the "professional" answers. The "professional" needs to become a "professional" to give "professional" answers.

    "Freon" is illegal in most countries, and has been in the U.S. for about 20 years. There are a very many different refrigerants in use since "Freon" has been outlawed. Most commonly in a window unit you will find anywhere from a 1/2 pound upwards of a pound depending on the size of the unit, and most often they use a different refrigerant than is used in central system. Typically they will use the same refrigerant as is used in a common household refrigerator, and both usually use inside of 1 lb refrigerant. It is usually the labor in testing a system for leaks and/or repairing those leaks/cleaning a system internally to prep it for topping off, rather than the cost of refrigerant and/or adding refrigerant, that makes up the bulk of the expense in repairs-regardless of how it is "written up in an estimate".

    Central A/C systems vary in size and the piping for the systems varies from one building to the next to it is an impossible question to answer without details. a typical 2000 sq ft 2 story home may have one unit with 7-1/2 pounds, while another may have 2 units running one for each floor. It, like i said, is not a question that can be answered in the same manner as a question like, "how much gas will fit in my cars gas tank?".
