  • Over the years, there have been a number of different methods of tooth whitening. These methods could not correct the appearance of crooked teeth. Lumineers are purported to do both.

    Lumineers

Lumineers are a type of tooth veneer. A dentist places Lumineers on top of your natural teeth. Lumineers are whiter and, in many cases, straighter than your own teeth.

    Application

Lumineer application is a two-step process. In your first visit, the dentist will make a mold of your teeth. The dentist uses this mold to make your Lumineers. You will also choose the brightness of your Lumineers at this time. On your second visit, your dentist will apply your Lumineers.

    Advantages

Lumineers are only 0.2 millimeter thick, which is thinner than traditional veneers. Application of Lumineers is generally pain-free and does not require grinding down your natural teeth. Lumineers may last up to 20 years with proper care.

    Drawbacks

Lumineers may come loose much easier than traditional veneers. It is not possible to repair them if they chip or break--you will have to get a completely new lumineer if damage occurs. The amount of reshaping that Lumineers can do is minimal, so if you have very crooked teeth, braces may be better.

    Cost

The exact cost of Lumineers will vary by area, individual dentist and your specific needs. But typically, you should expect to pay $800 to $1,500 per tooth. You may be responsible for all of this cost, as your dental insurance may not cover cosmetic procedures such as Lumineer application.
