  • Children should wear helmets to reduce the risk of head injury when riding bicycles or participating in other recreational activities. Wearing a properly fit helmet can save a child's life.

    Functions

Children should wear helmets when engaging in outdoor recreational activities such as bicycling, skateboarding and roller skating. Helmets are designed to protect a child's head should they fall and strike the ground or another object. Helmets protect the child's brain by utilizing impact foam and a hard barrier shell which is designed to fit around the head.

    History

Although several states and localities enforce helmet laws for persons under the age of 18, no federal law exists that requires minors to wear bicycle helmets.

    Identification

Different styles of helmets maximize protection for different outdoor recreation activities. For example, bicycling helmets are designed a little differently than skateboarding helmets or motorcycle helmets. Kids should wear the appropriate type of helmet for the activity in which they are participating.

    Considerations

Children between the ages of 10 and 16 may protest wearing helmets. Allowing them to choose their own helmet may encourage them to ride with safety in mind.

    Warning

According to the Bicycle Helmet and Safety Institute, the current impact foam used inside helmets may be too stiff. More studies are needed on the tolerance of a child's brain and which foam material is ideal for a child's helmet.
