  • Only a decade ago, the field of web design was a specialty. Today, web designers can be found in every industry, in a variety of work settings. Degrees and certifications can help a web designer land a job in almost any industry.

    Degrees

Employers hiring for a web designer position typically seek candidates with a bachelor's or associate's degree in graphic design or other related field. Relevant coursework and certification should involve mastery of design software and computer graphics.

    Programs

Design programs are available at two- and four-year colleges and universities, as well as at design schools. Relevant majors include graphic design, information technology and certain fine arts programs that incorporate computer coursework.

    Required Skills

Web and graphic designers should also be efficient in problem solving, communication and creativity.

    Growing Needs

As security issues become more prevalent, web designers will be required to have training and experience in cybersecurity, which can be earned through coursework in information technology.

    Changing Technology

As technology changes and grows, so will the list of training and education requirements. Web designers should, however, be experienced in software programs such as Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Dreamweaver, as well as in HTML programming.
