  • Houseplants add beauty to any home. Proper care will allow the plants to live long, healthy lives, benefiting the interior environment and giving years of enjoyment to its caretaker and visitors alike.

    Excess Moisture

Overwatering is the leading cause of yellowing leaves on a house plant. Excess moisture will cause root rot, oxygen depletion and fungal growth. Improper drainage will allow water to accumulate around the roots. Correcting drainage problems and following watering recommendations should correct the problem.

    Nutrient Deficiency

Nutrient deficiency will cause leaves to yellow due to lack of iron and nitrogen. Adding nitrogen fertilizer and chelated iron should correct the problem in a few days.

    Pot Bound

Root bound plants will see the lower leaves turn yellow. Transplanting to a larger container with a good potting soil mix will allow the roots to expand.

    Pests

Insects like mites and aphids and certain fungus and molds will cause yellow speckling on leaves. Closely inspect the leaves for signs of insects or fungal infection. Discuss treatment options with staff at a local nursery.

    Humidity

Most plants prefer humidity levels of 50 to 70 percent. Air conditioners and heaters tend to eliminate humidity and cause yellowing. Just as overwatering is a threat, so is allowing a plant to dry out.
