  • Lumineer is the trade name for a recently developed alternative to traditional veneers. Instead of whitening teeth, lumineers are bonded over the teeth in an attempt to create a natural-looking white smile.

    Traditional Veneers

Traditional veneers are essentially false teeth made of porcelain laminate that are bonded over the patient's natural teeth. The process involves drilling away much of the tooth in order to affix the veneers. The process can be painful and is irreversible.

    Lumineers

In contrast, lumineers are simply flat pieces of porcelain that only bond to the outside of the tooth. Each set of lumineers is created to be an exact match for the patient's teeth, so no drilling or other manipulation of the patient's original teeth is required.

    Process

A mold is made of the patient's teeth, which is then sent to the lumineer factory so that a matching set of lumineers can be made. Some moderate etching of the tooth surface may be required before affixing the lumineers, but this will not be noticeable if they are removed later on. The lumineers are bonded to the surface of the tooth with dental bond and an ultraviolet light.

    Benefits

Lumineers are only .2 millimeters thick, which is much thinner than traditional veneers. This means that the process is reversible, so if you don't like the Lumineers you can always have them removed. The process of affixing lumineers to the teeth is painless, as opposed to traditional surgery which can be very painful.

    Lifespan

The company that makes lumineers guarantees them for 20 years, which is equivalent to the lifespan of traditional veneers.
