"The Great Deluge," by historian Douglas Brinkley, covers a week of the Hurricane Katrina debacle, not just New Orleans (where he still lives) but the Gulf Coast Region.
He does not pull any punches, but he is fair to the "leaders".

Professor of History at Tulane University, he also taught at the U.S. Naval Academy and Princeton University.

If you want to understand the debacle of Hurricane Katrina and it's aftermath, this is the book to read.

a review: "Brinkley's account is an intriguing stew...the writing soars...If journalism is history's first draft, then The Great Deluge is 1.5"

    Read Blood Brothers...

sorry forgot the author i read a different book everyday or every other day..

it was VERY good. also i read Gym Candy which was also good.

Blood Brothers is about two best friends who are completely different. One just gets shit on everyday and is pushed around all the time and works at a hospital for 48$ a week as an "outer". the other one is like a jock.

A Book by Jeffery Deaver - The Sleeping Doll...the book is really amazing...the way the writer plotted and grafted the storyline and the way the good-doers and the criminal intertwined and collided in the book, so complex but yet so brilliant...you ought to buy it...hehe...a little synopsis...The Sleeping Doll is a girl who has survived when her family were murdered by a body-n-soul control freak during dinner one night...She was said to be asleep and was covered by her dolls when the murders are taking place....and so on...hehe..buy the book and you will enjoy it...(So many twist and turns in the story...u won't stop reading it...hehe :) )

"Resurrectionist" by James McGee - about the body-snatchers in London in the early 1800's (stolen from fresh graves and sold to the anatomy schools training surgeons). Great book.

Currently reading American Gods (cannot recommend highly enough - fantastic book!), The Dead Sea Scrolls Deception (fascinating if a bit dry) and Krakatoa (also highly recommended).

I know - I always have 3 or 4 books on the go...

"State of Fear" by Michael Crichton. Yes I recommend it. I liked all of the books I've read by him. I also like Dean Koontz, and Michael Connelly. But I suppose I'll be reading "The Grapes of Wrath" next. lol

I recently read a book called "Petropolis" by Anya Ulinich. I would recommend it - it's a little dark, but dark isn't always bad.

"The Third Eye" by T.Lobsang Rampa.
I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind.

"I am a Tibetan. One of the few who have reached this strange Western world. The construction and grammar of this book leave much to be desired, but I have never had a formal lesson in the English language. My “School of English” was a Japanese prison camp, where I learned the language as best I could from English and American women prisoner patients. Writing in English was learned by “trial and error”. Now my beloved country is invaded-as predicted-by Communist hordes. For this reason only I have disguised my true name and that of my friends. Having done so much against Communism, I know that my friends in Communist countries will suffer if my identity can be traced. As I have been in Communist, as well as Japanese hands, I know from personal experience what torture can do, but it is not about torture that this book is written, but about a peace-loving country which has been so misunderstood and greatly misrepresented for so long. Some of my statements, so I am told, may not be believed. That is your privilege, but Tibet is a country unknown to the rest of the world. The man who wrote, of another country, that “the people rode on turtles in the sea” was laughed to scorn. So were those who had seen “living-fossil” fish. Yet the latter have recently been discovered and a specimen taken in a refrigerated airplane to the U.S.A. for study. These men were disbelieved. They were eventually proved to be truthful and accurate. So will I be."

Otherwise Normal People, by Aurelia Scott
    Its about competative rose gardening.

The funniest line in the book was when Eleanor Roosevelt had a tea rose named in honor of her, she said: "I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue:'no good in a bed, but fine up against a wall.'"

The Stone of Tears by Terry Goodkind (vol. 2 in the Sword of Truth series)...I would recommend it to any fantasy reader who is a bit annoyed about the modern fantasy books like Harry Potter, Eragon etc.
this is good old fantasy writing, but still very original. any of the books by Terry Pratchett is good reading as well.

The Lost by Daniel Mendelsohn. It is a true story of the author's quest to find out what happened to his greatuncle, his wife and his daughters during the Holocaust. It is very moving.

Zadie Smith's "The Autograph Man." It was good. My son is going to read it so we can talk about it. It's a complex, "chewy" book. Zadie Smith is one hell of a good writer.

Currently reading "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I'm enjoying it a lot. It's a very simple story told in a simple way.
