A BTU is the amount of energy it takes to heat 1 lb. of water 1 degree F, and 120 qt. of water weighs 240 lb. It will take 240BTU to raise the water's temperature 1 degree. For example, 70-degree F tap water will need 34080BTU to go from 70 degrees F to boiling at 212 degrees F.
