Social Security benefits are meant as a social welfare or retirement insurance program. However, not everyone can successfully be awarded benefits. In order to claim benefits, there are certain conditions that must be met.
Citizenship
To apply for Social Security benefits, you must be a citizen or a legal resident of the United States.
Payment
Most workers in the U.S. are required to pay into the Social Security system. You must have made payments in order to be eligible for benefits later.
Age
In order to claim retirement benefits, you must be at least 61 years and 9 months old. You can apply for Medicare four months before your 65th birthday.
Disability
If you have worked and become disabled according to the definition established by the Social Security Administration, you can claim Social Security disability benefits.
Supplemental Security
If you are elderly, blind, disabled, and have little income, you can apply for Social Security's Supplemental Security Income benefit, which provides money to meet essential needs such as food and clothing.
