<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Latex Paint
Latex Paint, a water-based paint, goes on smoothly, is durable, fume free and environmentally safe. Gloss or semi-gloss paints are easier to clean. Use two to three coats of latex paint to achieve a uniform finish. Use an exterior grade paint if the furniture will be exposed to outdoor elements.
On the Other: Oil-based Paint
Oil-based enamel will dry to a hard finish, making it durable and resistant to dirt. Using an oil-based paint will require more clean-up; soap and water will not work. Be sure to use mineral spirits or paint thinner to clean brushes and tools.
Bottom Line
Sand and prime unfinished furniture before painting. Sanding will smooth out the surface of the wood and make painting easier. Priming will keep the paint from soaking into the unfinished wood. Choose either latex or oil-based paint based on color, desired finish and whether it will be indoors or outdoors.
