Folic acid, vitamin B9, is a necessary vitamin needed for the production of healthy cells. It can be obtained from the diet in fortified cereals, leafy vegetables, beans, fruit and nuts. The daily recommended allowance for children ages 1 to 3 is 150 micrograms, from ages 4 to 8 is 200 micrograms, ages 9 to 13 is 300 micrograms, and ages 14 and up is 400 micrograms.

On the Other: Supplements of Folic Acid Might Be Needed

Occasionally, a deficiency in folic acid might require supplementation with pills. Certain medications can reduce a person's folic acid. Some of these medications include sulfasalazine, methotrexate, anticonvulsants and metformin. Increased folic acid may also be required before and during pregnancy, in cases of liver disease or alcoholism.

    Bottom Line

In most cases, sufficient daily amounts of folic acid can be obtained from eating a variety of healthy foods or fortified food products like cereals. Some cereals are fortified with an entire day's supply of folic acid.
