    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Students who are interested in pursuing a master's degree can expect to spend around one to three years in their academic programs. Those who want to receive a doctorate can expect to spend three to six years in graduate school.

Certain fast-track degrees may be completed within a year, whereas a part-time degree may take three to four years. Rarely does a university allow a student to take more than six years to complete the degree. Additionally, the application process for graduate school may take from several months to a year; this process must be factored into the overall length of time it will take to complete your degree.

It depends upon several factors, but most importantly:
    1) What field of study
    2) Whether the Master's is a professional degree such as the Master of Architecture
    3) What college one studies at
Accredited professional degrees will generally be the longest since the program is designed not only to meet the college's requirements, but also those of the professional accrediting body. Even at one college at Harvard University, the Graduate School of Design, Masters degrees vary between the 1 year non-professional Master of Design Studies (M.Des.) to the first professional degree Master of Architecture at 3 1/2 years.
